Introducing – Chopard Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition Chronographs (specs & price)

| By Brice Goulard | 3 min read |

In the world of classic cars, one of the most prestigious and spectacular events to admire is the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. Looking at some of the best past Formula 1 or Le Mans drivers pushing hard in the middle of the narrow streets of Monaco, driving Pre-War or 1960s powerful race cars is certainly an experience. Chopard has been sponsor and official timekeeper of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique since 2002. You won’t be surprised to learn that the brand dedicates a collection to this event, and this year, two new limited edition watches have been presented – of course, to respect the theme, some chronographs. Here are the Chopard Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition Chronographs.

A key highlight in the classic racing calendar, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique is an authentic speed trial run on the Principality’s legendary circuit. Organized by the Automobile Club de Monaco, this biennial rendezvous for passionate devotees of old-timer mechanics turns the spotlight on a wide variety of cars from the world’s finest manufacturers, divided into seven categories. Offering a stunning retrospective of models, the competition takes place along the route of the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco, which is held a fortnight later. For this 10th edition of the prestigious event, Chopard just introduced two new limited edition watches, the Chopard Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition Chronographs.

As expected, considering the theme of this partnership, these two new watches by Chopard are diver-oriented chronographs. Offered in a choice of sand-blasted titanium and 18k pink gold, the Chopard Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition is a sporty and rugged watch made to be used for all racing activities, on-board racing cars or as a timing device alongside the track – and as all good chronograph, it can be used for any sports activity. 500 pieces in titanium and 100 pieces in 18k pink gold will be produced.

The Chopard Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition watches feature a large 44.5mm case showing a bold and masculine design. As a driver-oriented piece, the bezel is showing a tachymeter profile – used to calculate average speeds – and the pushers feature a piston-head design. The dials, with a mix of light to darker silver tones, emphasize legibility with a snailed pattern, large pointers for the hours and minutes as well as chronograph counters (at 12 for the minutes and 6 for the hours) with a contrasting colour. The small second at 9 is voluntarily left in the same colour at the rest of the dial, not to disturb readability. To push the racing style, these dials show coloured accents, blue for the gold edition and orange for the titanium / steel version.

To complement the racing style, the Chopard Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2016 Race Edition Chronographs are fitted with so-called “racing straps”. Made in dark grey barenia leather, with orange or blue stitching (to match the indexes on the dial), they have a perforated look, reminiscent of 1970s driver’s watches. In addition, a grey NATO strap with orange or blue accents is added in the box, for an even stronger sporty look. Inside the case ticks a reliable self-winding chronograph movement, based on a 7750 – with 46 hours of power reserve – and certified chronometer by COSC.
