The Zesty Summer Vibe of the Speake-Marin Dual Time Lime

Decked out in lime green, Speake Marin’s Dual Time is an invitation for some ‘hot fun in the sun’.

| By Robin Nooy | 4 min read |

Speake-Marin’s dual time with retrograde date is back in a hot contemporary blend of lime green and matte black DLC-coated titanium. Speake-Marin might be based in Switzerland, but its watches are true to the British heritage of the brand, where eccentricity of the sartorial and mechanical type reigns supreme. The brand’s signature off-centred layouts and the impossible-to-mistake Piccadilly case return with the Dual Time Lime. With its partially openworked dial and eye-catching colour, the Speake-Marin Dual Time Lime could be an ideal wrist companion for a spin in your convertible lime green McLaren 600LT Spider.

ECCENTRICITY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

The first Dual Time model of 2019 was built on the brand’s proprietary SMA01 micro-rotor base calibre with small seconds at 1:30. The enhanced SMA02 calibre, with dual time and retrograde date, was placed inside the One&Two Openworked Dual Time with its engaging blend of classical and technical elements on a skeletonised dial. Following in the footsteps of the Dual Time Mint introduced in 2021, with its refreshing minty green colour scheme, the latest Dual Time takes the colour scheme a mile further with bold touches of acid lime green.

Even if you are familiar with the unconventional location of the small seconds counter of the SMA calibre, you will see that in the Dual Time, just about everything, save central hours and minutes, is off-centred. Injecting a good dose of laidback fun is the vibrant contrast of lime green touches and matte black bridges on the dial.

Starting clockwise, the bright green small seconds counter at 1:30 is framed by a horseshoe-shaped track with a 31-day scale. This track corresponds to the retrograde date indication that jumps back to 1 when it has completed its monthly cycle and can be adjusted with the pusher in the caseband at 7 o’clock. The placement of the seconds counter so close to the crown and winding system, without any ring, attests to the sophistication of the module.

Moving around to the 5:30 position is the exposed barrel with its wolf-tooth wheel held in place by an openworked black DLC bridge and surmounted by the wheels of the gear train. At 9 o’clock is the two-tone GMT dial with its 24-hour scale. Picked out in lime green for daylight hours and black for night-time, the highly legible 24h home track is indicted by an arrow-shaped pointer with a green fluorescent insert. All three elements are positioned at different heights and triangulated to form a figure’ 3’. Local time is indicated by signature Speake-Marin heart-shaped hour and minute hands with lime green lacquer to match the dial.

PICCADILLY CASE, IN BLACK

The Piccadilly case is a cornerstone of the brand’s identity and is presented here, for the Speake-Marin Dual Time Lime, in lightweight yet resilient titanium with a scratch-resistant matte black DLC coating. As the latest member of the brand’s One&Two collection, the Dual Time comes in a choice of 38 or 42mm cases with a thickness of 12.5mm. With its generous drum-like shape, stepped bezel, protruding lugs and fluted crown, the case is impossible to mistake with any other case on the market. Recently refreshed with the help of designer Eric Giroud, the Piccadilly now has a thinner profile and more ergonomic arching lugs.

The lime green rubber watch strap, attached to the wrist with a black DLC-coated pin buckle, sits close to the case, and the crown is nestled deeper into the case for a more streamlined, contemporary look.

CALIBRE SMA02

Speake-Marin’s proprietary automatic calibre is developed, assembled and adjusted by Le Cerce des Horlogers watchmaking atelier in the Neuchâtel area. Since 2020, Christelle Rosnobolet, CEO and owner of the brand, has become the main shareholder of this atelier, giving the brand access to refined movements.

Automatic calibre SMA02 is fitted with dual time and retrograde date functions; it runs at 28,800vph and delivers a 52h power reserve. The view from the caseback reveals the bridges with thin ribbing and the micro-rotor below the brand’s hallmark topping tool picked out in lime green. Another cut-out area at noon shows the escapement and balance wheel.
