Glashutte Original Senator Chronograph The Capital Edition

For a couple of years now, Glashütte Original has been the official partner of the Berlinale (the Berlin Film Festival… which prompted us to create a movie together with the brand). Just a few hours before the opening of the festival, the Saxon brand treats us to a new watch, a dedicated limited edition based on the superb Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. Surprisingly colourful and inspired by the vibrant German capital, please meet the Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition”.

Glashütte Original is known for its superb movements and the beauty of its mechanics, as well as for a certain austere (quite German, in fact) sense of design. Tending towards clean, monochromatic silver or black dials, we have seen the brand moving in new directions recently, with a dose of cool, less rigid watches. For instance, look at the colourful Sixties Chronograph or the stainless steel version of the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date with its black dial and light blue indexes. A younger and bolder spirit has been recently infused into the collections and the new Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition” is evidence of that.

The new Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition” is technically identical to the previous editions of this complex, in-house chronograph. Both the case and the movement are shared with the gold edition launched in 2014 and the steel version launched last year. This new edition, strictly limited to 100 pieces in steel and 25 pieces in red gold, however, surprises us with a new dial that is colourful, bold and unprecedented. Indeed, the idea was to tap into the vibrant attitude of Berlin, a city known for its unique flair.

The dial of the Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition”, produced in-house, is presented in a warm “Bourbon Grey” colour, with a sunburst pattern. Showing green/brown reflections, it also features beige, white and blue details. The sub-dials are circled by a deep-blue ring, while the hands and indexes are filled with beige Super-LumiNova. Clearly not a design that you would have expected to see the brand coming with a few years ago – but times change and this new “The Capital Edition” is quite refreshing.

The polished and satin-brushed 42 mm stainless steel or red gold case is familiar and elegant. Not too sporty, it sticks to its German heritage. While the gold edition is equipped with a dark blue leather strap, the steel version can be fitted with a strap matching the dial or a steel bracelet. In addition, a five-piece limited edition in platinum with a silver dial will also be presented during the Berlin Film Festival.

Inside the case of the Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition” is the same Calibre 37 equipping other models in the collection. This in-house automatic movement is a modern take on the chronograph, with its integrated architecture, its column-wheel and flyback function. It runs at a modern 4Hz frequency and can store up to 80-hours of power reserve. The display is also rather unique, with the signature Panorama Date positioned at 6 o’clock, a small seconds counter at 9 o’clock with a power reserve indicator and the chronograph counters respectively at 12 o’clock and 3 o’clock.

The Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition” will be available in 100 pieces in steel at EUR 13,200 (on leather) and EUR 14,700 (on bracelet), 25 pieces in red gold at EUR 27,700 as well as 5 pieces in platinum (price TBC). More details on glashuette-original.com.
