Tudor Black Bay GMT Pepsi Bezel 79830RB - Baselworld 2018

Every year, Tudor fans can’t wait to see what the brand will be releasing at Baselworld. The prediction game is over as Tudor has just unveiled its novelties for the 2018 edition of the watch and jewelry show. Among these, the new Tudor Black Bay GMT – with a strong Rolex flavor – will certainly catch their attention as the iconic Tudor model is getting the addition of a new function, a GMT, indicated with an additional central hand on a 24-hour ‘Pepsi’ blue and red rotatable bezel.

The Tudor Black Bay GMT is powered by the new in-house automatic caliber MT 5652 introducing a new function to the Tudor movement portfolio. The GMT or second time zone is shown using an additional hour hand rotating in 24 hours and is read on the two-tone bezel showing day and night. Running at 28,800 vibrations/hour, caliber MT 5652 can store up to 70 hours of power reserve. The variable inertia balance wheel (with a non-magnetic silicon balance spring) is held under a full cock. A stop-seconds allows for precise time setting. The movement is COSC certified.

Caliber MT 5652 is cased in the Black Bay case with its large crown. Measuring 41mm in diameter, it is fashioned out of steel and features the addition of a 24-hour bi-directional rotatable bezel with 48 notches. The graduation is on an anodized aluminum disc in matt burgundy and blue. Water-resistance is still at 200m, making this watch a true diver.

The domed black dial comes in the Black Bay style, inspired by the brand’s 1950s models. It features luminescent hour markers paired with the signature ‘snowflake’ hands allowing for optimal legibility even in dim light.

  1. What’s the case thickness? The previous Black Bays were 14.8mm thick and I see that the movement in this GMT is 1mm thicker than the movement in previous Black Bays. 15.8mm would be a bridge too far

  2. Guys, I think this watch represents a very smart move on behalf of Rolex/Tudor. Rolex most likely recognized that there is a huge demand for Pepsi/Coke GMT watches. And Rolex could hardly cover that demand all by itself, plus part of potential buyers would not be able or willing to pay Rolex prices.
Therefore, launching two very similar watches at the same time and at different price points makes a lot sense – they can capture a much larger portion of the potential demand out there than Rolex could by itself.
Commercial considerations aside, I believe this is a compelling watch. Watching pics of the new Pepsi GMT and this one side by side I actually prefer the overall design of the Tudor, although I’m still not convinced about the three snowflakes. I have never been a big fan of the shiny Rolex GMT bezel. To me it shouts: ‘nouveau riche … ‘
Can’t wait to see the Tudor GMT in person …

  3. Is the dial , hour markers , or any parts make of gold or white gold like Rolex ?
