It isn’t the first time we’ve talked about the partnership between TAG Heuer and Aston Martin.  We covered this watch, based on the Carrera Heuer 01, which was introduced to seal the collaboration between the two brands. A watch based on a car… Always cool. But today, what we have to show is even cooler, as it is the opposite. Meet the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera 2019 – and yes, in the box you’ll also find the keys of a car. And not any old car!

As a result of the partnership between TAG Heuer and Aston Martin, both brands have worked closely to create a watch that would reflect the sportiness, the racing influence and the boldness of the Swiss watchmaker. As a result, this new limited edition is daring and fuelled with motorsport influence.

Based on the modern Carrera, with its large modular case, the Heuer 02 x Aston Martin has a 45mm case composed of forged carbon fibre elements (lugs and bezel) and a central container in black DLC. The casebands are specific to the Aston-branded watches, with grooves all along the circumference. The theme for this year is full black with red elements, which can be seen on the rubber strap with leather inlay, the dial or the pusher. The dial is also an ode to Aston, with a hexagonal cut-out face matching the grille of the DBS. The embossed leather mirrors the leather inside the car.

Powering this TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera 2019 is the recently introduced Heuer 02 movement, an integrated automatic chronograph with column wheel and vertical clutch. It is produced in-house by TAG Heuer and benefits from the more balanced 3-6-9 position of the sub-counters (on the contrary to the previous Heuer 01). The movement has a specific gold-plated rotor on the back and a DBS logo transferred on the crystal.

This watch is limited to 50 pieces… But hold on. It isn’t available – or at least, you can’t just by the watch. Inside the box, there’s a small extra. An additional content that has 715bhp and can reach up to 211 mph. OK, we might have oversold the watch a bit. It is, in fact, a limited edition Aston Martin that is delivered with a watch by TAG Heuer.

Well, let’s be a bit more realistic and focus on the important launch… Indeed, sealing the partnership between these two brands was the introduction of a 50-piece limited edition Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, which is based on a TAG Heuer theme. While most of the collaborations between a watchmaker and a carmaker result in watches inspired by a watch and not the opposite, chapeau to Aston and TAG for creating a car that has a watchmaker’s name on its seats.

The base is the well-known 2018 DBS Superleggera, the ultimate road car now in the collection at Aston Martin – without mentioning the ultra-exclusive, ultra-powerful, not even launched yet Valkyrie. The DBS is an evolution of the V12-powered DB11, with more power, more aggressive styling and slightly less weight – as described by EVO here “Think of it as a DB11 V12 that’s had a professional makeover and spent a lot of time at the gym“.

Powered by a 5.2-litre V12 engine with twin-turbo architecture (gone are the days of the naturally aspirated 6-litre and its stunning sound…), the DBS is the athletic model of the range – hence its name Superleggera, meaning Super-Light, even though at 1,693kg dry, this isn’t truly what I would call a lightweight. The engine, compared to its Gran-Tourer sister the DB11, has received special treatment with more power and torque, making this car pretty fast (with a 211 mph top speed and a 0 to 100 mph time of just 6.4 sec). More aggressive suspension, more carbon fibre all around and a less restrictive exhaust and you’ll end up with the sportiest of the DB cars ever.

Without changing the technical specifications, Aston Martin presents a 50-piece limited edition of the DBS Superleggera that has been designed in association with TAG Heuer. It is presented in Monaco Black paint with a satin black tinted carbon fibre roof, mirrors, vents, louvres, splitter and spoiler. The bespoke specification includes satin black 21” twin spoke wheels fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres with a red accent to complement the red brake callipers. The fender badge with TAG Heuer logo complements the exterior look.

Inside, the DBS boasts black leather and Alcantara seats with red stitching and bespoke TAG Heuer quilting, each displaying the TAG Heuer logo, and carbon fibre and dark chrome have been used throughout to accentuate the clean lines of the cockpit.
