Seventy years ago, in 1948, one of the most legendary car brands ever was born. Its name: Porsche. Its earliest model: the 356, the predecessor of the illustrious 911. The name Porsche doesn’t refer exclusively to the carmaker but also to a design centre – and not the worst of them to be honest – under the name Porsche Design. It so happens that PD has also been involved in the creation of timepieces since 1972. Thus, it makes sense to join forces between these two worlds and for this exact reason, Porsche Design pays tribute to this important anniversary by introducing the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition, a special edition limited to 1948 timepieces.

The 1919 collection is the worthy successor of Porsche Design’s earliest creations – those shaped by Butzi Porsche himself. Its original shape is the result of a complex design process, guided by efficiency and engineering in mind (how Porsche is that?). Its case, which is no more than a central container with a cylindrical shape, is framed by two lug modules that are hollowed to save weight, to hug the wrist and to create a cool visual lightness. Surprisingly bold and original while staying extremely sleek and essential.

Also, in the vein of the brand’s first timepieces, the 42mm case of the new Porsche Design 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car Limited Edition is crafted in titanium with a black titanium carbide coating, resulting in a matte, almost stealth watch. With its rather large diameter and its 100m water-resistance, it remains a true sports watch. Inside the case is a well-known movement, a Swiss Sellita SW 200-1 automatic (38h power reserve, 4Hz frequency, hours, minutes, seconds and date). This edition features an integrated black calfskin strap with black stitching and black folding clasp – black all around, to maintain a clear focus on the dial.

To pay tribute to mother brand Porsche and its 70th anniversary, the dial of the 1919 Datetimer 70Y Sports Car LE is decorated with the silhouette of the iconic Porsche 356 and the year 1948. This dial also includes the characteristic tachometer rings used on the dashboard of the legendary Porsche 356. In order to guarantee maximum contrast and readability, the hands are executed in white and the three-dimensional ceramic numbers and indices are precisely inserted into the dial’s milled recesses.

The back of the watch again pays tribute to the legendary sports carmaker, with a special “70 years” logo engraving, the 1948-2018 dates and the unique number of the watch – xxxx/1948. For the record, it is important to note that Porsche Design is able to create custom-made series of watches – in the same vein as this one – but also for other parties, such as retailers, collectors’ groups, Porsche owners and of course, some linked to mother brand Porsche.
