Oris Aquis Date 39.5mm now with Green Dial

Reasonable size, trendy colour and still class-leading performance.

The Oris Aquis Date needs no introduction anymore. It is one of those relatively affordable automatic watches that we often cover, here at MONOCHROME. Performing both at the office or at the beach, the recent facelift operated by Oris gave this watch an even more desirable look, without jeopardising its diving capacities. Usually spotted in a large 43.5mm diameter, there’s another smaller option available – which we’ll call more user-friendly. And today this model gets a trendy new dial. Meet the Oris Aquis Date 39.5mm now with a Green Dial.

As mentioned, the Aquis Date is a no-brainer for anyone seeking an accessible yet robust dive watch with a Swiss automatic movement, a protected case but enough elegance for daily use. Previously just a no-nonsense tool watch with only its diving capacities in mind, the evolution undertaken in 2017, when the watch was facelifted, added a small hint of elegance to this model – redesigned indexes and hands, new colours, different shape of some elements – all of that done in a rather conservative but successful way.

A year later, the brand decided that this model should be even more “urbanized”, with the introduction of a smaller version – not a ladies’ watch but a sort of mid-size model, replacing its 43.5mm case with an easily wearable 39.5mm case. Already available in black with a brushed bezel, in black with a polished bezel or in blue with a polished bezel, there’s a fourth model joining the rest of the collection – and one that is clearly playing on the trend for coloured watches.

Based on the same specifications as the model already available – see here – Oris gives its Aquis Date 39.5mm a new and rather well-executed green dial (clearly one of the most trendy colours this year). For the occasion, the dial isn’t matte but features a sunburst brushed pattern, which will certainly result in changing tones and nice reflections. The applied indexes and hands, all filled with Super-LumiNova, haven’t changed.

Instead of the typical black bezel, Oris combines its green dial with a matching ceramic bezel – which is polished. Again, to give this watch a more urban look. The case, with its integrated lugs and the redesigned protective device on the side, is the same as other editions of the watch and still water-resistant to 300 metres. It will be offered on a choice of leather strap, rubber strap or stainless steel bracelet – all with a diver’s folding clasp.

Inside the case is the tried-and-tested Calibre 733, based on a Sellita SW 200-1. This automatic movement beats at 4Hz and has a 38-hour power reserve. It is hidden behind a solid steel back but still features the signature red rotor.

The Oris Aquis Date 39.5mm with Green Dial will be available as of February 2019, at a price of EUR 1,650 (leather or rubber) or EUR 1,850 (steel bracelet). More details at oris.ch.
