Introducing the Rönkkö Minotaur Light Edition (specs & price)

In terms of watchmaking, there are the big names (large, international brands) and there are the independent watchmakers – something that you know us to love here, at Monochrome-Watches. However, even in this small world of “indies”, there are some distinctions to make. There are famous and noisy ones and then there are some that seem sort of monk like, with a life devoted to watchmaking and watchmaking only. With his watches hand-made in Finnish silence and inspired by Greek mythology, Antti Rönkkö is one of them. And here is a new iteration of Rönkkö Minotaur, the Light Edition.

This watch isn’t a pure novelty, as back in late 2015, we already showed to you the Dark Edition of this Rönkkö Minotaur. As we told you, Antti Rönkkö found inspiration for this watch in the myth of the Minotaur – and even if we know quite a lot about watches here, Greek mythology is another story. However, once the idea of “a creature with the head of a bull on the body of a man, dwelt at the center of the Labyrinth” explained, you clearly understand the look of this Rönkkö Minotaur Light Edition (or Dark Edition).

As the previous edition and after the Steel Labyrinth, Antti Rönkkö wanted to create a complication that took the story of the labyrinth, and the wandering beast inside, the Minotaur, as a basis. The Dual Moon Complication highlights the dualism of the Minotaur, animal vs. human, and also good vs. bad. The Dual Moon Complication is built in-house and indicates both new moon and full moon. The moon phases are indicated by two talismans representing the dark and light sides of the Minotaur. The light full moon Minotaur talisman is made of stainless steel while the new moon Minotaur talisman is made of dark coated stainless steel.

The dial is composed of a complex hour-track, fully skeletonized and with Roman Numerals directly crafted in stainless steel. To continue with the myth of the Minotaur, the main dial depicts a Labyrinth. The back, with its opened work rotor, finishes the theme and feels completely homogeneous. The movement is based on a Soprod A10 movement, with on the top an in-house module for the Dual Moon complication.

This Light Edition of the Rönkkö Minotaur differed from the finish of the case and the colours applied on the dial. The 42mm case, with the signature sharp lugs, is know made in raw stainless steel (instead of PVD, IP black coated steel on the Dark Edition) and the inner flange with numerals is now in polished stainless steel.
