Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro

When you think about Giuliano Mazzuoli – in case you know it, and if not, now you know – you might have a minimalistic but recognizable design in mind as well as the use of fancy materials, never to rarely seen in watchmaking, like for instance marble or cement – yes, the case is made with these materials! Well if you think this is going a bit too far for a case, then there might be a solution in-between these and a traditional black or white dial, with the new Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro with green and blue dials.

Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro

While being at first extremely simplistic, the watches from Giuliano Mazzuoli are quite easily recognizable and rather cool. The design is based on the idea of the manometer (this instrument to measure pressure and vacuum). Its case is round – very, very round – it is sleek and soft – well, you can hardly do a case with fewer angles – and it makes it in fact different from the rest of the crowd and, after more than 10 years of production, quite iconic and well known from serious collectors. What makes this watch really different is both the position of the crown – at 2 here or at 10 for left-hand versions – and the way the strap is attached to the case, without traditional lugs. Finally, there are the proportions: 45.2mm diameter and almost 15mm height, but overall a watch that looks small on the wrist. The design is basic but not void of interest – at all.

Instead of playing on dials and colors, Giuliano Mazzuoli has been using unexpected materials instead, to create unseen cases. For instance, he used carbon fiber or PVD coating (nothing extraordinary, even if the carbon fiber case was very nicely done) but he also used carrara marble and cement, two materials that you clearly won’t think of to create a watch – more a bathroom or a wall maybe. Giuliano uses it for its cases. And the result is really quite good looking – see here. This is of course rather wild and if you want to go relatively unique in the design and with a nice, colorful dial, the new Giuliano Mazzuoli Manometro with green and blue dials might be for you.

The design of the dials is like the rest of the watch: clean, extremely legible, inspired by manometer’s dials, with clear numerals and tracks, as well as plain simple hands, to the exception of the red arrow second hand, again a reference to the pressure gauges. However, as simple as it gets, the result remains very interesting and eye-catching, like if the simplification of the design was beneficial to the eccentricity of the watch. It is surprising and original enough, especially with these 2 new dials. It comes on a natural Florentine leather strap that is produced manually in Tuscany and inserted directly into the case.

Inside the stainless case ticks a robust and simple 3-hander, the automatic ETA 2824/2, without the date function, for an even cleaner look. This choice feels like pretty natural, considering the toolish vocation of the watch, its simple display and finally, it allows the watch to come for a relatively low retail price (around 2,500 Euros). Quite a fair price for a watch coming from an independent manufacture, with a design that clearly stands out of the crowd. More details on www.giulianomazzuoli.it.

  1. Do you think that 2500 euros, for an ETA2824 and a brand with low heritage, is relatively low price? Let me have an opposite opinion.
