Introducing – A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin 37mm – Germany’s perfect dress watch and Lange’s new entry-level

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin 37mm and 40mm

At the SIHH 2016, A. Lange & Sohne came with an updated edition of its most elegant and discreet watch, the Saxonia Thin, their vision of a slim and refined dress watch. Following the updates on the entire Saxonia collection (see the 2015 editions), the 2016 Saxonia Thin featured longer indexes and a cleaner dial. All of that was available in a rather large 40mm size and as of now, the thin Lange will also be available with a new case of 37mm, for an even more refined look. And the best is that when the 40mm is priced over 24,000 USD, this 37mm edition comes for 14,800 USD, becoming Lange’s entry level watch! And now that’s a pretty big deal.
A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin 37mm and 40mm

The A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin is visually a very simple watch, which only shows two hands (hours and minutes). The dial is as clean as you can expect from such a watch, with simple applied batons for the indexes and the logo of the brand. However, considering the 40mm diameter, it could be seen as – A – too large to be called a proper dress watch – B – a bit too clean, as the dial is rather empty and quite large (choose the right mention). We, at Monochrome-Watches, always tend to guide you to smaller watches, knowing that size doesn’t matter in terms of elegance. It’s not that we’ll always tell “the smaller, the better”, but in terms of dress watches, a bit of downsizing is always welcomed. We already loved the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin for its sleekness and we’ll certainly enjoy it even more with its new 37mm diameter.

As we didn’t see the new A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin 37mm in the metal yet, we can’t really argue on the benefits. From the photos, you could easily say that the difference remains subtle. However, in terms of proportions and visual experience on the wrist, 3mm is a world of difference. We wouldn’t be surprised that what can be seen as a too clean dial on the 40mm, somehow rather empty, could well transform into a perfect balance of elegance and grace. Things are always a matter of perspective and proportions, and if the contrast of a large case with a very slim profile can sometimes lead to a watch too “flat”, the proportions of the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin 37mm could be entirely different.

The 37mm edition of the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin keeps the same attributes as the 40mm. It only differs from the diameter. The thickness – well the thinness in this case – is at 5.9mm. The dial is still the same and the indexes are showing the same design. Same goes for the movement, shared in both editions, which means that the view from the caseback on the 37mm will be even more pleasant, considering that the movement will better fill the case. The calibre L093.1 is a manually-wound movement, measuring only 2.9mm in height. It boats 72 hours of power reserve, which, considering the ultra-thin construction and a single barrel, is rather comfortable. The finishing is on par with the rest of the Lange production: German Silver plates and bridges, hand-made decoration of all the parts (even on non-visible sides), solid gold chatons and blued screws and, as usual, the typical engraved cock bridge. German haute horlogerie at its best.

Like its 40mm sibling, the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Thin 37mm will be available in both 18k pink gold and 18k white gold, with matching hands, indexes and buckle. Available now through official boutiques and retailers.

The best is of course the price. The 40mm is available for 24,500 USD. This 37mm edition of the Saxon Thin comes against 14,800 USD, which, let us be clear, is just a bargain! A ultra-thin watch, with the quality of a A. Lange & Sohne and the beauty of the German-style movement for under 15,000… What more do you want?. More details on www.alange-soehne.com.

  1. Hi Brice, you wrote “knowing that size doesn’t matter in terms of elegance.”

Perhaps I might have misinterpreted what you meant, but say for example a 50mm diameter watch on a puny 5″ wrist certainly doesn’t spell elegant to me!
