A new guilloché dial in “Chronoswiss Anniversary Blue” adds a visual punch.
Chronoswiss is practically synonymous with regulators, embracing this old-school dial display with separate registers for the hands since 1987. The brand recently launched a new, modern take on the style with the Flying Regulator Open Gear, a sophisticated, contemporary shift from its more traditional pieces like the Regulator Classic Date. Various derivatives soon followed like the futuristic Flying Grand Regulator Skeleton Limited Edition. One of its latest creations is the Flying Regulator Night and Day, which adds a date window and 3D day/night display to the open gear base. The new limited edition adds some pizzazz to the Night and Day with an intricate guilloché dial that’s galvanized in blue. It’s not uncommon for Chronoswiss to release special editions or new colour schemes of existing models, and this is an excellent example. Let’s take a closer look.
The case is the same 41mm (13.85mm in height) as the previous Night and Day models, comprised of 16 parts with the signature knurling around the top and bottom edges. The hallmark oversized onion crown sits at 3 o’clock and long, arching lugs secure the strap with exposed screws. A sapphire exhibition caseback displays the decorated, automatic movement and the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. As mentioned in previous Chronoswiss reviews, you won’t mistake this case for any other brand.
The dial, however, is the star of the show. Replacing the previously flat lower dial surface is a guilloché pattern that is crafted in-house with an antique rose-engine lathe. The multi-level construction of the dial has separate hour and seconds registers (at 12 and 6 o’clock, respectively) raised in funnel-shaped sub-dials, while the central minute hand swings above both. All hands are leaf-shaped and the hour and minute hands have Super-LumiNova inlays. The seconds sub-dial is also skeletonized to reveal the regulator module below. A curved date window returns at 3 o’clock displaying three digits, with the central one marked by a red/white triangle. The spherical day/night display at 9 o’clock is made from blued titanium with laser-cut stars filled with Super-LumiNova, and the bottom cover has a hand-painted limited edition number.
Powering the watch is the Chronoswiss calibre C. 296 automatic, based on the ETA 2895 with an in-house regulator module (also modified for the day/night complication). It has 27 jewels, beats at 28,800vph (4Hz) with a 42-hour power reserve. Seen from the exhibition caseback, the openworked rotor is rhodium plated with Côtes de Genève, while the bridges and plates are decorated with perlage.
The new Chronoswiss Flying Regulator Night and Day Limited Edition is limited to 50 pieces, while other Night and Day models without the guilloché dial have a more standard availability. The price remains to be confirmed. More information can be found at www.chronoswiss.com.
