Antiquorum sells MCT Sequential One for $50k

| By Frank Geelen | 1 min read |

It doesn’t happen too often, that watches from an independent watch brand are auctioned. So the rare moments this happens I’m always interested to see how it did.

Yesterday an MCT Sequential One in pink gold (from January 2009) was auctioned by Antiquorum in New York. The auctioneers set the estimate at  $25,000 to $35,000. The hammer price was $40,000 and including the auction premium this makes $50,000. Although the new owner paid only 50% of the new value, I think this is not bad for two year old watch from such a relatively unknown brand!

For collectors, auctions like held by Antiquorum offer the opportunity to obtain watches that have been sold out or that are just above budget when they’re new. Personally I would feel comfortable buying a used independent (if I had the budget), although I’ve heard people who worry about warranty and service by smaller independent. For those who do worry, maybe reading about GEO’s experience with his recently acquired Hautlence HL05 will be comforting.

At Baselworld 2010 I met with MCT Watches and got to see the Sequential One ‘in the metal’ and immediately loved it. Look at my previous post to read more about MCT Watches and the Sequential One’s technical features. Especially the very intuitive time indication, which is far from the ordinary, is a joy to look at.

More information can be found at the MCT Watches website and official Facebook page.

  1. Hmmm, I don’t know Frank…

The knowledge that the watch one probably wants to buy is worth less than half of what he/she has to pay in two years time, could easily scare a potential buyer off in my opinion.

But it’s a fact, and not only for this MCT Sequential One of course. All relatively new and mostly independent brands suffer this unfortunately.

So let’s be happy that there are still people willing and being able to afford the purchase of these technically extremely interesting and mostly very beautiful initiatives. Otherwise we could be only looking at those boring Pateks 😉

  2. You’re right Gerard, but this not only complies for independent watch brands, but also almost every other watch brand out there. Some are seriously bad in the second hand market and only a hand full do well.

  3. Hi Frank,

Just want to point out MCT, although “relatively unknown”, as you point out, still has a Facebook page with 1,554 fans and 54 followers on Twitter – which is more than other much more well known brands out there 🙂

  4. Over 1,500 Facebook fans is indeed a good number for a relatively unknown brand. This is always good for brand recognition and MCT is doing a great job with social media.

  5. I think the auction price is normal for a high-end, second hand watch. Most timepieces, including those from much more famous brands, depreciate at a similar rate.

  6. This is such a cool watch!
I find the price way too low, but unfortunately that happens all the time
to most independents and also non independents.

  7. @Nicolas… that’s so true! Both independent and big-name brands depreciate at a similar rate. Only a few do better and I guess we all know who those few are 😉

@Geo… agree, it would be better if high-end watches didn’t depreciate this fast. But on the other hand, I don’t buy a watch as an investment and I never recommend this to anyone. So for some collectors this makes a nice opportunity and they can buy their dream watch this way. Similar to your recent experience with your HAUTLENCE.
