Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 Double Red on Ebay for just $ 225,000.00

| By Frank Geelen | 1 min read |

For sale on Ebay: a very rare Sea-Dweller reference 1665 Double Red MK1… for just $ 225,000. Yes indeed, no typos, this is indeed the price it’s been advertised for!

The Swiss watch prices increase, sometimes two times a year, and the current high rate of the Swiss Franc doesn’t help either. Word got out that Rolex intends to increase their prices again in January, so yet another raise is awaiting. It looks like the seller of this rare vintage Sea-Dweller probably also wanted a piece of the action…

This Sea-Dweller 1665 MK1 is indeed very rare one. We already wrote about the different version of the Sea-Dweller ref. 1665, including the MK1,  so you can compare the specifications yourself. The one on auction has an incredibly well kept dial, which is even more rare. On the MK1 dials the ‘double red’ print is printed on top of the white print and on most examples the print has faded to pink or sometimes even to almost white after more than 40 years. On this example the print is still red, very RED.

Most of these vintage dive watches where actually used for diving, something which cannot be said about most modern dive watches that are mainly used for desk-diving. Whether this is an 100% original Rolex Sea-Dweller ref. 1665 MK1 with a rare prototype bracelet, can be judged by experts.

The mind-bending price is something else though. Two hundred and twenty five thousand dollars, $ 225,000 USD for an old and rare Rolex dive watch. That’s steep to say the least. This summer a similar MK1 was sold by Antiquorum in New York for $ 67,000 including the buyers premium.

  1. Thanx for sharing this Chazlin. This result also shows this Ebay seller is pushing the boundaries a bit too far. I’m sure many more Double Red’s have been sold for prices around 70-80k, so that might be a realistic price.

  2. I have a double red with a very interesting history, which came into existence via a diving job conducted whilst serving aboard MV Seaforth Clansman (Saturation Diving Vessel chartered by the Royal Navy circa 1978), 1st Gulf War active duty etc. This was gifted to a colleague (RN Clearance Diver) by Stenna Line; in short he saved the cost of a dry docking of a RoRo Ferry full of cars/passengers whilst alongside in Aberdeen, hence no papers or box. the watch was brand new and arrived in a box wrapped in paper with no strap fitted. I purchased it from him after leaving the RN in 1999. For more info / questions please email me.
